A few useful notes that I have picked up from various places…

Sharpening

• Sharpening can sometimes introduce unsightly halos.
• Use layer masks and sharpen selectively.
• Sharpen on a new layer. Duplicate this layer. Change the blending mode on one to Lighten and on the other to darken. Nowyou can selectively control the amount of darkening or lightening applied. Halos usually result from lightening during sharpening. Reduce the opacity of the lightening layer to taste.
